Netflix put the opening few minutes of the first episode of season two of this fun mystery show on YouTube where my girlfriend and I were delighted to see Wednesday go through airport security where the real problem wasn’t her many weapons but Thing’s hand lotion only to take on a serial killer played by Haley Joel Osment.
Man, that killer didn’t know what hit him.
Anyway, it looks like the show got a bit of a budget boost since Morticia and Gomez are now bumped up to series regulars and not just the occasional guest stars. Luis Guzman is one thing, a capable actor but never a huge star, and Catherine Zeta-Jones’s career ain’t where it used to be, but these are recognizable actors that probably cost more to keep around than, say, the various other actors who may have hit it big because of Wednesday and not the other way around. Factor in as well that Steve Buscemi is the new, fire-tossing principal and Billie Piper is onboard as the music teacher, and that’s a few more recognizable faces in the cast.
But let’s set all that aside for a moment because even with everything that’s changed, there’s one thing that stays stubbornly the same, and that’ Wednesday herself. She’s still the morbid, deadpan girl she was before, even if her kid brother Pugsley is not a student at Nevermore and he towers over her. I realize Jenna Ortega isn’t all that tall a woman, but that kid actor hit quite the growth spurt. He’s also something of a try-hard as he wants the other kids to like him, but he’s a freshman and no one cares all that much.
Meanwhile, Wednesday wants the opposite of all that, but she absolutely has it. She’s popular, being held up as a hero by Dort and a whole host of starstruck new kids. Enid is no help as she has her own drama, and neither do the black tears Wednesday sheds when her psychic powers kick in the wrong way. Morticia might know about that sort of thing, but Wednesday isn’t interested in having her mother around.
If there’s one thing Wednesday has in common with many of her teenage classmates, it’s that she doesn’t want her parent hanging around the whole time either.
Oh, and an investigative reporter is murdered by a murder of crows while Wednesday’s stalker was never caught.
Yeah, I think it is safe to say Wednesday is back and maybe better than it was before.
