Life, Larry, And The Pursuit Of Unhappiness “Lawrence”

That’s it?  Bummer.

Yeah, the series comes to an end, and it maybe saved one of the best sketches for last.  I mean, like, really last.  First here, Larry is trying to kiss a nurse on V-J Day, only to be called a masher, and eventually a Nazi, and threatened by a sailor played by Joe Manganiello.  It’s short, based off the famous photo of a sailor kissing a nurse that may not have been all that consensual.

Then Larry stuff William Henry Harrison’s face despite the fact you need to starve a fever and feed a cold.  Or whatever.

Then there’s the Donner Party.  Vince Vaughn is there for some reason.  Greg Kinnear is leading the rescue party, amazed at how healthy the people there are as Larry, Vince, Jeff Garlin as the leader, and a woman who looked vaguely familiar, kept making vague statements until a  blanket fell away to show a pile of human bones.

But then…the gold mine: Barack Obama as himself, showing how his advisor Larry David made some unfortunate moves that forced the president to wear the tan suit.  The jokes themselves are very Larry David-ish, but the fact is, Obama actually holds his own in the sketch.  Like, I can see Obama as a regular on Curb Your Enthusiasm given his delivery, deadpan demeanor, and mildly exasperated expression.  It just, somehow, felt right.

And then he’s back to put out some parting words, stop Larry from swiping a button from George Washington’s coat, and then even suggesting Larry should self-deport.

Look, I know this is a special mini-series to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, but I sure as hell would love if Larry made more in the future.  Sure, getting a former president (that Larry likes) on TV for something like this is unlikely to repeat, but this was a fun show, and maybe the best thing I’ve seen for America’s 250th birthday.  It was fun, funny, and Larry David told Barack Obama he looked pretty, pretty, pretty good.  Sure, I didn’t love every sketch, but I loved the show in general.

I think that means I need to go back to Curb Your Enthusiasm now.
