Rachel buys a cake as an apology to the Cunninghams that says “Sorry for thinking you were trying to kill me.” It’s a gesture some of the Cunninghams don’t take very well…most likely because they have no idea how freakin’ weird they all are.
Then again, the episode opens from the point of view of a man breathing very heavily as he spies on people throughout the house. Is it the Sorry Man? I don’t know. Jude sees him, and he jumps Rachel at the end of the episode. But this guy may somehow be the most normal guy in the house. Rachel seems normal unless you stop and think about how she doesn’t seem to have put any thought into a lot of traditional wedding details.
Granted, she thought it was going to be a small ceremony. But, you know, something very bad is going to happen. It’s right there in the title, plus the opening scene from the first episode that comes before this extended flashback to say how we got here. Is one of these people a killer? Is the Sorry Man real? Why does old Boris spend so much time doing taxidermy? Does no one besides Nicky care that his mother is dying? Does Victoria? Wait, Rachel is a therapist in training?
These people could probably use one. The most normal may be Nell, mostly because she married into the family, but she dated Nicky before marrying Julian, possibly because she wanted to marry the creep brother instead of the nice brother, which may be a sign that Nicky is going to be the psycho at the end of the mini-series. I mean, there could be a supernatural thing going on, or it could just be these people are all kinda nuts.
I mean, I wouldn’t want Portia to plan my wedding. She seems like the Bridezilla type, and it isn’t even her wedding. It might be so much worse if it was.
Still, I get the impression that Rachel’s group therapy thing–that excludes grandson Jude because he can just do stuff in the creepy old house by himself apparently–did appear to get something done. Was it a good thing? Beats the hell out of me. Therapy doesn’t solve anything in one session. I know that for sure. Plus, some of these people seem like they need a lot of it. Years of it, even. Maybe if they talked out their emotional problems, nothing very bad would happen.
That would make the series title a lie, though.
