Oh, was this episode how Joel McHale got the Animal Rescue gig? I feel like it’s how he got the Animal Rescue gig.
Basic Premise: An octopus terrorizes some scientists.
Writer: Glen Morgan
Commentary: You know, I see X-Files veteran Glen Morgan’s name on this episode, and it feels like an X-Files episode, one where I wonder if the black-and-white is robbing me of some clearer views of things, but then an octopus tears a guy’s eye out, and I am kinda glad I’m not seeing it in full color.
Yeah, so, some scientists find a killer octopus while, ostensibly, researching the ice shelves. Two of the scientists, Americans, are working on something else, but they suspect the Chinese scientist on board, who speaks no English and relies on a translation app on one of the Americans’ phones to be understood, she might know something.
Anyway, this octopus kills, like, every one else on the ship save the three mentioned above. It even kills the guy the subtitles tell me is named “Werewolf Larry,” which is an odd name for a bald guy even if he does have a thick beard and a bunch of tattoos. Also, he fears the octopus, and it still kills him.
So, it comes out that the Americans are looking to find the octopus to use genetic engineering to cure diseases while the Chinese want it to let people live underwater and get all kinds of other benefits.
The Twist: The octopus was the one on a mission to steal human DNA to altar his kind to take over the surface. That kinda sucks. Well, for us.
What about Jordan? He’s just standing behind the others on the ship when he has something to say. Maybe help out a bit, man!
