The Twilight Zone “Among The Untrodden”

Two boarding school students test one of their purported psychic powers.

Sorry, no recognizable guest actors this time around, but it’s set at a Catholic girls’ boarding school.  That might count for something, but it probably doesn’t.

Basic Premise:  The new girl in school thinks a popular girl has psychic powers.

Writer:  Heather Anne Campbell

Commentary:  I think you could have titled this episode “Teenage Girls Are The Worst” and probably been fine.  Popular mean girl Madison joins in with her popular, mean girl friends to taunt newcomer Irene, particularly since her science project involves testing her classmates for psychic powers.  Madison gets all the questions wrong, and that actually means she had to be faking it so she might actually be psychic.  Somehow.  Or something.

Anyway, Madison and Irene take to testing what psychic powers Madison might have because a popular mean girl with psychic powers is never a horrible idea.  Then again, if weird nerd Irene had the powers, it might actually be a redux of Carrie, with less pig’s blood.

Eventually, it comes out that Madison can read minds and conjure things she needs, but once she needing whatever she conjured, it disintegrates.  That means going up to the roof with a conjured key with Irene and the other mean girls, but when awkward Irene says embarrassing things, Madison goes to defend her.  Irene then slips off the roof and…well, she’s fine.  She then starts hanging with the popular girls, but it’s a trick, and the other girls all collapse and maybe die after doing a nasty prank, to the point where Madison thinks Irene is the psychic because she wanted to be friends, and Madison has to admit she never really had a friend before.

The Twist:  No, Madison is the psychic.  Irene was just a conjured thing and disintegrates as soon as Madison admits Irene is her friend and she was just lonely.  That’s…creepy as hell actually.

What about Jordan?  He’s seated in the back of the classroom.  That doesn’t look the slightest bit suspicious in an all-girl high school.
