Slightly Misplaced Comic Book Characters Case File #524: Muse

An artistic serial killer is hard to track, even for Daredevil.

The recent addition to Daredevil’s Rogues Gallery appeared on the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again, and I gotta say, that was a pretty comics-accurate look to the guy.  Was it a comics-accurate portrayal?

I looked into it!  Here’s Muse.

Muse, real name unknown, was an Inhuman artist with some inhuman mediums.  First appearing in Daredevil #11 from September of 2016, he was the creation of writer Charles Soule and artist Ron Garney, and an Inhuman, he did have some superpowers.  Beyond superhuman strength and speed, nothing too extreme, but his real power was this ability to absorb sensory information, making him incredibly hard to track, even for Daredevil.

His first superhero encounter was apparently with a guy named Blindspot.  I don’t know much about him.  He exists.  That’s it.

Anyway, Muse’s whole thing is art, and his medium is, well, corpses.  He mixes paint from the blood of his victims.  He poses corpses for diaramas or something.  And since he’s hard to detect, he’s pretty much hard to find and stop.  He would gouge Blindspot’s eyes out when Blindspot and Daredevil caught up to him, and Muse then broke his own fingers to prevent Daredevil from doing it first.

Muse’s prison stay would be a short one, and when he broke out (killing about a dozen guards on his way out), he took up a tribute to vigilantes in more permanent ink.  While creating one for the Punisher, some cops found him.  Muse just killed the cops and added them to the display, giving Mayor Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk an excuse to blame the Punisher and vigilantes as a whole for what happened.

So, how did Daredevil beat this guy?  He didn’t!  Blindspot did, using the Hand’s mystic powers!  And the Muse was so bummed, he killed himself.  He actually went to Hell, and he seemed to enjoy himself there.

Muse would come back as a ghost of sorts to inspire a second, female Muse, but that’s his comics story.

Naturally, he was just a non-powered psychopath on Dinsey+, as played by actor Hunter Doohan.

This Muse killed people, mixed paint, popped up in maybe three episodes, and was shot to death while fighting Daredevil in his therapist’s office.  So, how comics-accurate was this Muse?

Well, he looked good!
