Wait, there’s a comedy show that did an episode based around a terrorist attack on a major city that aired roughly one year after 9/11?
Oh, wait, this is the show where the main character complimented a father on the size of his young son’s genitals. I probably shouldn’t be surprised.
So, I think the issue here is…yeah, this one was a bit too far for me to really believe in. Larry offends Paul Reiser’s wife Mindy by accidentally ignoring her when he greets Paul at dinner, and that I can believe, and the ongoing feud between the Reisers, the Braudys, and to a lesser extent the Davids, that all I can buy. This one really is the sort of show that would go to those sorts of lengths thanks to Larry’s frequent social faux pas and so forth.
Yeah, that stuff I can buy. It’s the terrorist plot I’m a little wary on, plus Alanis Morissette’s actions.
Oh, and are benefits frequently held in people’s living rooms? I get that Larry is rich and all, but the point is, it seems weird that the Braudys and then Cheryl are doing benefit concerts in their homes with Alanis Morissette, playing herself.
What seems weirder the terrorist attack. Now, to be fair, there isn’t one. Not really. Wanda Sykes, who may or may not be playing herself, shows up to say her brother, who works in American intelligence, knows there’s supposed to be a terrorist attack somewhere in the city that weekend, and that Larry and Cheryl can’t tell anybody. Larry wants to get out of town. Cheryl doesn’t want to miss the benefit because…reasons?
Anyway, Larry decides to tell Mindy Reiser to get back on her good side, but that’s bad because Mindy Reiser can’t keep a secret. So, everyone knows there’s gonna be an attack, and the panic that Wanda’s brother was trying to avoid, that happened. Or something. Now everyone is mad at Larry because the terror attack never came, everyone except Mindy, who gets mad at him again when he, mid conversation, runs out to talk to Martin Short on the street and practice his Jiminy Glick impression.
So, Larry gets back on Mindy’s good side by later telling her who Alanis Morissette is singing about in “You Oughta Know” because for some reason Alanis told Larry, and c’mon, I saw that coming from a mile away.
Now, intelligence agencies are rarely that precise, so the date thing shouldn’t work. I don’t see why Alanis Morissette would tell Larry, a man she just met, any secrets of any kind. And why is Mindy Reiser so popular that she can spread a rumor that fast? See, I should not be thinking about such things as I watch an episode of anything.
