Curb Your Enthusiasm “The Benadryl Brownie”

Season Three, Episode Two

I love how the screenshot for this episode shows the late Joan Rivers is in the episode, but when I sit down to watch the episode, she’s barely in it.

What a bait-and-switch!

So, Larry really screwed up this time, and that’s mostly because he came up with a really, really awful idea.

See, Richard Lewis is dating a woman that he is sure is “the one” and that he plans to take to the Emmys.  However, this woman is a Christian Scientist, and even Larry and Richard seem to acknowledge that a hypochondriac’s dating a Christian Scientist who believes you need to pray diseases away and never take medicine is a really bad idea.

It gets worse when Larry’s new cell phone, one recommended by Richard, is terrible and drops crucial information to Cheryl about Richard’s girlfriend’s peanut allergy, one set off when she comes to Larry’s for dinner and to watch Richard’s comedy special.  Her face swells up and she won’t take any medicine to fix it even as her mother and various friends hold prayers in the next room.

And here’s where Larry and Richard have a brilliant idea:  get a recipe for Susie Greene’s brownies that were a big hit at the dinner and mix some benadryl in to give to Richard’s girlfriend so she can get better by taking medicine without knowing it.

Um, that’s so wrong.

It doesn’t help that Larry’s plan goes to pieces almost immediately when Susie refuses to share the brownie recipe.  She even gets mad at Jeff for taking them to Larry’s house because they were for their son.  Jeff’s probably lucky he doesn’t live at Larry’s house.  Larry even says he might lose a testicle to no effect.

Then Cheryl raises rightful moral objections before agreeing to bake the brownies.  It is worth noting Larry didn’t know if Cheryl even could bake.  Plus, he assumes that the benadryl had no taste.  The pharmacist might have said as much.

However, the brownies aren’t as good, and they do taste different, so Richard ends up taking his girlfriend to the Emmys with a face that never appears on camera, and Joan Rivers makes some jokes about it.

Huh, maybe it’s a good thing she was barely in the episode.  That ain’t cool.

Also, Wanda Sykes as some issues with Larry that might look like racism when it probably isn’t.  I don’t think Larry’s a racist.  He’s pretty much like the way he is with everybody.
