I spend a lot of time mulling over whatever happens in a given episode is Larry’s fault or not.
This one? Totally Larry’s fault.
Larry’s goal, for the season insofar as he has one, has been to get his new sitcom idea on television. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is just about done with it, and given where her career went, it’s really kinda hilarious that she’s the Seinfeld cast member who is playing a typecast actress. I think it is safe to say she’s been the most successful of the cast, at least as far as getting work goes. Larry and Jerry might be richer as a result of Seinfeld–I believe they are the only ones who get royalties off the reruns–but Jason Alexander and Michael Richards haven’t had anywhere near the success that Julia Louis-Dreyfus has had. Really, she’s been typecast? There’s nothing of Elaine Benes in Selina Meyers. Heck, she was getting more work than the guys did even before Veep happened.
Sometimes jokes age in weird and unexpected ways.
Where was I with all this? Oh yeah. Everything that goes wrong here is Larry’s fault because, while out on a walk with Jeff, he doesn’t stop to chat with a restaurant manager. This whole thing sets off a chain of events when Cheryl wants to have dinner there, and Larry wants to take some leftovers out to his limo driver.
Why do Larry and Cheryl have a limo right now? Eh, I missed it. I was too busy wondering when Julia Louis-Dreyfus was considered a washed-up has-been who’d been stereotyped and typecast enough to make a show about an actor who’d been stereotyped and typecast to the point where they were considered a washed-up has-been.
Wait, where was I again? Oh yeah. It’s all Larry’s fault.
OK, I suppose the thing with the masseuse that Larry went to, when she was starting to give Larry a handjob, he probably could have stopped her sooner. But then he wouldn’t have something to hide from Cheryl. You know what Cheryl isn’t? As talented as Julia Louis-Dreyfus! To be clear, I am referring to Cheryl David and not Cheryl Hines. I have no strong feelings about Cheryl Hines as an actor. I may question some of her personal decisions, but that’s another matter. Cheryl David goes to see a psychic too. Why? Well, she’s accurate. I guess that’s something. Maybe a psychic could tell me when Julia Louis-Dreyfus was getting typecast all the time.
Where was I? Oh yeah, Larry went to take a fork to the driver, was accused of theft, and forced to wear a sandwich board outside the restaurant where all the TV executives saw him, and his show never got picked up. That’s Larry’s fault, but also, it was his fault for thinking Julia Louis-Dreyfus was a typecast actor who couldn’t get any other work after one iconic role.
That’s what happened. I think.
