Slightly Misplaced Comic Book Characters Case File #509: The Foreigner

A mysterious assassin from somewhere else keeps messing with Spider-Man.

So, I was thinking for this week, after my two weeks off, was to cover Kraven the Hunter since, you know, he had a movie for some reason and his backstory is actually kinda insane.  Is he dead?  Is he his son now?  Who knows?  You know, besides Jimmy.

But there were other Spider-Man-related characters in there, like the Foreigner, a character I almost covered here before but didn’t bother because, well, he doesn’t actually strike me as being overly interesting.

I am not sure if this is the Foreigner or not because I don’t find him that interesting.

The Foreigner, real name unknown, first appeared in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #116 by writer Peter David and artist Rich Buckler.  He’s basically a mysterious assassin type.  Does anyone know his name?  Well, he was married to Silver Sable for a while, so I am guessing she knows his name, but apparently no one has ever really asked her for that bit of crucial information.  I did learn that editor Jim Owsley actually wanted the Foreigner to be the real identity of the Hobgoblin at one point because writer Roger Stern left the Spider-Man books before he got around to unmasking the guy.  You know, before Stern came back and revealed that the Hobgoblin was some tailor or something.  I don’t know.  I haven’t read those issues or covered the Hobgoblin here.

Maybe I should.  Since Norman Osborn came back, there hasn’t been much of a need for the Hobgoblin.  I mean, I could cover Silver Sable too while I am at it.  But for now, I am mostly just avoiding talking about the Foreigner.  That suits me fine as I don’t find the Foreigner all that interesting.

Anyway, the Foreigner first popped up making a bet with another assassin named Chance about whether or not Chance can kill Spider-Man.  Spoiler alert:  Spidey survives.  From there, the Foreigner does nefarious things like romance the Black Cat and hiring other kills when someone hires him to do stuff.  He’s a skilled assassin with no special powers aside from maybe hypnosis that he can use for short periods of time.  Most of the stories Wikipedia summarizes seem to suggest the guy gets involved in stuff like assassination, whether he gets his own hands dirty or uses hired goons, or maybe something involved business and gambling or both.  And still, no one seems to know this guy’s name.

I mean, presumably there’s at least one country out there where he isn’t a foreigner because he’s from there.

Anyway, actor Christopher Abbott played the Foreigner in Kraven the Hunter where he seemed to be an American judging by Abbott’s accent, but everyone else seemed to be Russian or something, so I guess he’s still a foreigner.  This Foreigner had teleportation powers.  Or mind control caused by counting to three.  Or maybe he bent time.  I’m not sure.  The movie didn’t explain it very well or even at all.

No, this guy is the Foreigner, not Kraven!

Eh, it wasn’t a very good movie anyway.

Does that mean I need to cover Kraven now?  Or the Hobgoblin?  Or Silver Sable?  Well, I’ll probably cover at least one of them very soon.  All I know is the Foreigner, he’s just not that interesting.
