I don’t really know where this show is going, but I now have a good idea where it might end up.
But I do know it was renewed for a second season.
Here’s what I have long since figured out: the point of the show is to have the Sisterhood, led by Valya, on one side fighting for control of the empire through the fearful, timid Emperor Javicco while Desmond Hart and Javicco’s wife Natalya plot on the other side. Sure, there’s side stuff like how the Emperor’s illegitimate son Constantine is jockeying for a position of his own while Keiran Atreides seems to want to be a hero of some kind while working for rebel group. Those aren’t necessarily bad plots, but the whole thing here is Desmond vs the Sisterhood. This episode drops two big clues: Desmond has both Harkonnen and Atreides genetics according to the Sisterhood’s own computer systems, and Hart tells Natalya that he was abandoned as a baby by his mother, and said mother was one of the Sisterhood.
Sure, that means Hart has a real beef with the Sisterhood, but the fact that he’s got Harkonnen and Atreides genetics sure does point in the direction of one person: Tula Harknonnen, Valya’s sister, member of the Sisterhood, and someone who as a young woman went to great lengths to seduce and then fatally poison a whole lot of members of the Atreides clan for some vaguely-defined revenge because the Atreides made the Harkonnens look bad during the machine war or some such.
Now, I would think the series wouldn’t be that obvious in finding out who Hart’s mama is. Like, I am probably supposed to think it’s Tula. It certainly isn’t Valya, and the other option would be some character that never appeared before or only had a small cameo or some such. I mean, I suppose it could be that Hart’s mother is the Atreides and Valya and Tula’s dead brother, whose death appeared off-screen, is the man’s father. Regardless, making him a nephew to Valya (or even a son no matter how unlikely that is) might explain his resistance to the Voice, a technique that Valya apparently invented.
So, is that it? All that is happening is because Desmond Hart is mad at the mother he never knew and may be locking horns with his aunt? And he may or may not know that?
Well…no. There’s still the question of whether or not what Valya is up to is for the greater glory of herself, House Harkonnen, or the Sisterhood? Or maybe some combination therein? Her dead mentor and predecessor, speaking through Sister Lila, seems to approve of what Valya is doing, but there’s something going on there that I am not sure even Valya can answer. All I know is she hates House Atreides and wants success for both the Sisterhood and her own House. But this is ten thousand years before the birth of Paul Atreides, so maybe she sets up the prophecy that will eventually lead to the end of her own House.
Oh, that’s ironic.
