Unsurprisingly, Bev Melon was not trying to kill anyone with that gun. She didn’t even think it was loaded! Granted, it was loaded, but she wasn’t looking to hurt anyone.
It’s the thought that counts.
Bev was investigating things on her own, but that just leads the trio to think someone on the movie killed Sazz. That means looking deeper into each of them, starting with the insecure screenwriter. Granted, insecurity fits all the characters here like a glove. Mabel isn’t even sure what her purpose is until Charles proposes “podcast producer,” and Oliver keeps insisting he’s in great shape, the equal to his girlfriend’s former Olympic swimmer onscreen love interest, a man whose last name has become a noun and a verb in Hollywood related to the size of his member or his skill in using it or both.
To that end, the screenwriter Marshal does point out that the clues they have suggest the shooter had to get down to Charles’s apartment in under 12 minutes after shooting Sazz from the West Tower, something that would require a person of great speed and strength. The comedic highlight of the episode may be when Oliver attempted to make the run himself, dressed like some kind of tennis pro, and running into every possible problem to slow him down, including angry guest star John McEnroe.
That sort of comedy I can’t say I was expecting. It was just so random in what is normally a more character-based form of comedy. I mean, I dug it. It’s funny. But it was sort of random, and that was what made it funny.
The photo shoot doesn’t help much. Or it does. It’s hard to say. With a little help from Eva Longoria, the trio gets a way to check for footprints for everyone down there, to see whose footprint matches the one on the window sil. And that’s when Charles gets an idea: there was a second killer! One to do the shooting, and one closer by to do the body disposal and clean-up! And the Brothers Sisters, the directing duo that seem to communicate telepathically, well, their shoes match the print, and one of them is strong enough to lift a body.
So, that’s the next red herring because we’re still too far from the end of the season to get an idea who the killer is just yet.
Besides, this time the episode ends with a gun actually going off.
