Curb Your Enthusiasm “The Car Salesman”

Season Two, Episode One

Well, this episode is a series of things that happen.

In many ways, this episode works as something to pick up where things left off, with returning ideas and concepts.  Larry and Cheryl apparently moved out of their old house and are looking for a new one because of that low-hanging wire, and Larry and Cheryl again debate the cut-off for calling people late at night.

But this episode is also just kinda all over the place.  For a normal show, that might be a problem.  For Curb?  That seems par for the course.  So yes, Larry and Cheryl move into a new home that Larry thinks is too big for them (it is if you ask me), there’s a weird noise only he can hear at night, and he has to keep hearing how people assume that George Costanza was the idiot character on Seinfeld because there always has to be an idiot character on a sitcom.

George is many things, but he’s not stupid.  He’s lazy, greedy, and puts a lot of energy into things he shouldn’t, but he is isn’t stupid.  I’d pick Kramer for the stupid one if someone has to be, to be honest.  Or maybe Jerry for not getting a better class of friends.

That all leads to Larry’s going to see Jason Alexander, who repeats the idea that George is a moron to Larry’s irritation, and that leads to an argument where Jason says stuff that George did on the show that was dumb only for Larry to always shoot back he actually did those things, but then Jason’s concerns over type casting give Larry the idea to make a new show about a typecast actor that both men seem to like.

I suspect that may be a season-long arc because not much comes of that, and I am not sure how I feel about Curb‘s being a serial show instead of an episodic one.

However, the main plot, if there is on, has Larry’s becoming a car salesman because he oddly enough always wanted to do that and assumed he’d be good at it.  Why did Larry want to be a car salesman?  No one seems to understand this interest of his.  I know I don’t.  But it is typical that he’s fired after getting into a scuffle with an irate Richard Lewis.  And he almost had a sale too…

Will Larry get anywhere with anything?  Well…there’s always a first time!
