Look, I know the next season is the last one, so things need to end in a dark way, but I wasn’t expecting it to be that dark.
I was, for a while there, really questioning how much this show really understands how American government given the Vice President-elect is openly disagreeing with the President-elect, and there’s all kinds of talk of invoking the 25th amendment on a guy who hasn’t even been inaugurated yet, but that’s a moot point by the end of this episode as Victoria, outed as a supe on live TV by Homelander, decides she’s had enough and wants to talk to Hughie, only for Butcher to walk in with his new tentacle powers to rip her apart in front of everyone and then walk off a vial fill of virus and not a worry in the world.
And what made Butcher that bad? Ryan’s accidental murder of Grace Mallory, and even then, it was probably more Ryan’s reaction to killing someone he used to like than anything else.
It doesn’t much matter as Neuman’s death is soon in the news, the President-Elect is under arrest, the Speaker of the House who will let Homelander do what he wants, is now the president (again, the guy under arrest was not inaugurated yet), and Homelander has already had anyone in Vought that might cause trouble killed by the other members of the Seven, so why not dispatch other supes to bring in the Boys just as they were all separated and trying to go into hiding? Frenchie, Kimiko (who finally speaks to shout “NO!” over and over again), M.M, and Hughie are all captured. Annie’s powers kick in enough for her to fly away, and the only member of the group who is actually guilty of killing Neuman and who has the anti-supe virus is driving off with a smile on his face and a dark version of himself that only he can see appearing in the rearview mirror.
And this comes after Annie escaped a trap and beat up a shapeshifter holding her face, the tension between her and Hughie that doesn’t last long, and a whole host of other things that makes for what may be a fun and standard episode of The Boys before becoming, well, that.
And Sister Sage, so pleased that the plan she had actually worked, that she had baked in Homelander’s own self-centered stupidity, and the smile on her face and the excitement in her voice as she is just so pleased to do more, well…yeah, she’s way more dangerous than Homelander, but that was hardly a surprise. The season ends where the only real hope for the good guys winning is Annie, and her powers aren’t what they used to be. Most of the Boys are under arrest, and neither Butcher nor Homelander exactly have the best interests of others in mind.
Damn, I need to wait for this to end. Bringing Soldier Boy back is also something that will probably only cause more problems. Really, this was a good enough episode that went over the top bonkers in the last few minutes in a good way, not the way this show often does by going just a wee bit too far with the gore and juvenile humor.
But hey, I need something for Fridays again. I could go back and finish Sweet Home, but I am in no rush for that.
I’ll just have to finish off Vikings: Valhalla instead.

I have been enjoying that one more anyway.
