The Boys “The Insider”

Season Four, Episode Seven

Hey, that’s a clever title!  It has, like, multiple meanings because it could refer to many characters.

I mean, the obvious is A-Train, finally revealed to be the spy to Homelander, and how Sage was using him to give false information.  He’s smart enough to remove his tracker, and he’s actually good enough to come rescue the Boys (in the form of Annie and reinstalled leader Butcher) from the Deep and the new Black Noir, a narcoleptic who Sage apparently was also screwing around with without her feeling the need to have a lobotomy every time.  Sending those guys is a terrible idea.

By the by, am I supposed to feel bad for the Deep?  Because I steadfastly refuse to feel bad for the Deep.

Regardless, A-Train actually comes through for the good guys here, and even tells M.M. exactly what M.M. needs to hear in order to get him back where he belongs.  M.M. isn’t leadership material, but he is a good investigator who can man a mini-gun with the best of them.

But there are others.  Sage is sort of an insider given what’s been said of her plans until Homelander fires her, and his idea was to send the Deep and Noir to bring in Butcher which, again, is a terrible idea.

Then there’s the shapeshifter that took Annie’s place to rob her apartment of something after seducing Hughie.  I did like how the shapeshifter’s powers worked in that, after physical contact, she has to literally pull her skin off in bloody clumps to get to her new form.  It’s the sort of detail in this world showing how messed up some powers are in how they work.  But yeah, that’s an insider that the others haven’t caught on to yet.

But then there’s the insider that will probably cause the most problems, namely Kessler.  Butcher is dying.  Kessler is his evil side that only he can see, and while Butcher can see Ryan is a good kid even if he is a supe, what with the kid declaring something is wrong and awful about the puppet show he’s appearing in for the holidays–beyond the fact that it is a puppet show to begin with–but Kessler, nah man, he got the virus back, and you just know he ain’t gonna stop at just Neuman and/or Homelander, even if Frenchie refined it to something less genocidal.

But with Butcher maybe dead, it may be time to consider that there’s something far, far worse than him inside his body.  Homelander is bad.  Evil Butcher might be worse.  Or at least equally bad.  At a certain point, evil is evil, right?
