Noteworthy Issues: The Penguin #4 (November, 2023)

The Penguin makes one last recruiting trip, and this one is the most dangerous.

I am still having a hard time believing this isn’t some sort of mini-series, but I have another review for an issue of The Penguin.  Make of that what you will.

Issue:  The Penguin #4, November 2023

Writer:  Tom King

Artist:  Rafael de Latorre

The Plot:  The Penguin goes to see his deadliest for:  his ex-wife.

Commentary:  It sounds almost like a joke:  the only person that Oswald Cobblepot is afraid of is his ex-wife, Lisa.  She’s a tall blonde that, like the other romantic connections that have appeared in this book, that would seem to be out of Oswald’s league, and yet, there’s a connection.  I won’t question it.

The point here is the Penguin is afraid of Lisa.  And quite frankly, he should be.

The point here is the Penguin is rebuilding his empire, and he’s doing it first through careful recruitment, with the Help as his personal bodyguard, the former Freedom Force as his muscle, and now Lisa as a potential tactician and advisor.  The issue here shows Lisa is, quite frankly, brilliant, and there’s a good reason why this woman is someone who frightens the Penguin far more than the Help or the former government-sponsored superhero team did.  Those were people he knew how to manipulate to his purposes.  But his ex-wife?  Well…there’s a reason he wants her on his side, and this issue made for a nice change of pace for the confident mob boss easily prevailing.  He may still get what he wants, but it won’t come easily this time.

I’m all for this sort of thing.
