Noteworthy Issues: Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong #2 (November, 2023)

Godzilla in Metropolis? Giant bats in Gotham? Looks like this is a job for the Justice League.

Unwieldy as the title of this mini-series is, the first issue had this charming feel to it.  It’s nothing serious, but it isn’t trying to be.  That helps out quite a bit for something like this.

Issue:  Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong #2, November 2023

Writer:  Brian Buccellato

Artist:  Christian Duce

The Plot:  The Titans of the Monsterverse are running around the DC Universe’s biggest cities.

Commentary:  I find I really like this story.  There’s a part of me that thinks I shouldn’t, and it’s basically the comic book equivalent of a popcorn flick, but the DC characters are all characterized well in their own rights, and the Titans are no pushovers.  The first issue ended with Godzilla coming into Metropolis’s bay.  This issue shows a couple more monsters (none of the really well-known ones) popping up in other places with a  giant bat appropriately attacking Gotham.

So, that’s Superman vs Godzilla and Batman vs a giant bat.  Which one does better?

Actually, this series shows how Titans can lose, but Godzilla is on an order of magnitude higher, with his sense of needing to bring down the alpha creature having him make a bee-line for Superman with the Man of Steel’s strength and speed suggesting the two might be somewhat evenly matched.  Godzilla is not just a big lizard after all.  If he was, well, this would be a pretty quick story.  As it is, the fight in Metropolis isn’t looking too good while Batman demonstrates why the guy with just a lot of expensive stuff might be able to get some things done as long as he uses all the resources at his disposal, the biggest problem being a member of the extended Bat-family.  Showing the weaker or non-powered heroes can hold their own while the Titans are no pushovers is the sort of thing a story like this needs.
