Noteworthy Issues: World’s Finest: Teen Titans #5 (November, 2023)

The Teen Titans face off with the Terror Titans!

This here is the sort of issue where things that were building up finally come to a head.  Things have been kinda easy for the Teen Titans so far, but maybe that streak is coming to an end.

Issue:  World’s Finest: Teen Titans #5, November 2023

Writer:  Mark Waid

Artist:  Emanuela Lupacchino

The Plot:  The Terror Titans strike!

Commentary:  The whole “Terror Titans” thing has been happening in the background for a few issues now, and it finally comes to a head when their mysterious leader is revealed to be Haywire, an electrically-powered young man who had a try-out with the Teen Titans but wanted to steal military secrets from the government and got bounced from the team unceremoniously after his first mission because the Titans don’t steal.  He got kinda mad about that, and his plan here seems to be working in large part due to fissures between the Teen Titans ranging from Robin’s Batman-forced secrecy to Roy’s misinterpretation of what he overheard at Wally’s house to even Wally’s hero worship of Robin.

That Robin finds a way to win the team back together on the last page works (I think) in large part due to the fact that it shows how Robin is different from Batman and how the Titans are different from, say, the Justice League.  The Titans are as much about being a family as anything else, and they don’t take what they do quite as seriously as the League does because the League is there to save the world, and the Titans do that while spending time with their friends.

Still, Waid and Lupacchino were laying the groundwork to show the Teen Titans weren’t unbeatable.  It’s just their flaws were more character-based as people with problems, often ranging from differing levels of maturity and adult experience.  They can and will be friends, and fortunately, Batman isn’t always right about what people need.

Besides, the Free Comic Book Day DC issue showed Haywire’s fate in the future ain’t so good…
