Noteworthy Issues: G.O.D.S. #2 (November, 2023)

Wyn looks more into Cubist Core while Aiko goes recruiting.

What’s going on with this new series from Jonathan Hickman?  Beats the hell out of me, but it looks cool so far.

And hey, since I started winnowing down the different series I cover here, I can catch up to the faster.

Issue:  G.O.D.S. #2, November 2023

Writer:  Jonathan Hickman

Artist:  Valerio Schiti

The Plot:  The-Natural-Order-of-Things takes the spotlight as they need to beef up their numbers.

Commentary:  In the first issue, I learned there are these two secret organizations in the Marvel Universe, namely The-Powers-The-Be and The-Natural-Order-of-Things.  Wyn is the seemingly immortal avatar for The-Powers-That-Be, and he was forced to split off from his wife Aiko when she got a promotion at The Natural-Order-of-Things.  Wyn is a magician, a powerful one who came up with a plan to defeat one Cubist Core to stop a world-ending Babylon Event in the first issue, but what’s the deal with The-Natural-Order-of-Things?  Why do these two groups have a cold war of some kind going on between each other?

Well, it seems as if the two have different ways of looking at the world.  Both have access to places like the Library of Worlds and the like, but The-Powers-That-Be use magic while The-Natural-Order-of-Things is all about science.  I think.  And since The-Natural-Order-of-Things lost a lot of members during that Babylon Event, that means they’re going recruiting!

As near as I can make out, this series so far is more of an exploration of the world these two groups work in behind the scenes.  Most of this issue is Aiko recruiting a new member for her group in the form of an ambitious but frustrated college student.  A move like that allows the reader to see how the group works as Aiko explains things to her recruit, and it sure does look like a wild trip.  Wyn, meanwhile, is looking to find out more about Cubist because how the heck did that guy nearly destroy reality?  There’s something going on here, but I am mostly just enjoying the ride, mostly because I am not sure there is much else to the series so far than that.
