The Clone Wars “Legacy Of Terror”

Obi-Wan and Anakin need to fight some zombies to save another Jedi Master. No, really.

I saw some pretty intense battle scenes in this “droid factory” story arc, but I sure as hell was not expecting a zombie movie.

Yeah, that’s what happened here.  The factory is destroyed, but Separatist leader Poggle the Lesser got away.  Jedi Master Luminara Unduli headed out with a single clone in a sandstorm, and she never came back.  As a result, Obi-Wan, Anakin, Commander Cody, and a bunch of clones all head out to find her, hopefully alive.

Good news:  she is still alive.  Poggle took her to his people’s queen because they’re an insect race, and there is a giant female laying an endless number of eggs in an underground hive of some kind.  That’s one thing.  She also has these worms that are so good at controlling the minds of her drones that they even reanimate the dead.  The only way to stop these guys is to take out the head.  Decapitation works, but these guys seem to have pretty solid skulls, so just shooting them in the head doesn’t seem to stop ’em.

Now, this was a Saturday morning cartoon.  How creepy can this get?

Oh, very creepy.  Obi-Wan sends two clones to the surface to call for help, and it would be one thing for the zombie bugs to get them.  But it is another thing entirely to show these two clones fighting back, getting grabbed from the shadows, and get carried off screaming.

I never expected a horror movie when I put this episode on.  I really never expected a fairly competent one.

But then comes…the twist!  Luminara is still alive, and the bugs are going to do something to her!  The queen has plans, and while Anakin wants to just run in swinging his lightsaber, Obi-Wan wants to try talking.

You know what?  That could be a different take.  Try talking.  No need to antagonize the giant queen who looks like she is three or fours times as big as the Jedi.  Besides, maybe she doesn’t know what Poggle is up to.  All Obi-Wan has to try offering a reconciliation of some kind.  Does he do something like that as a preamble?

Um, no.  He walks up and tell her that her reign on the planet is over.

Man, that just makes the zombie maker mad.  Don’t make zombie makers mad.  It’s not a smart thing to do.

He then seems to go along with the idea that the queen should test one of her worms on Luminara, causing a rare moment of agreement between Anakin and Luminara.

Oh, it was all a trick to try and get a worm to study later.  Never mind, Cody was set up with an ambush, Luminara is saved, Poggle escorted out in handcuffs, and the hive was buried by, well, whatever the hive was made of.  But really, DO NOT ANTAGONIZE THE ZOMBIE MAKER!

I think I am starting to see why some clones think the Jedi treat them as expendable.
