The Clone Wars “Landing At Point Rain”

Anakin, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, and Ki-Adi-Mundi.

In the previous episode, Anakin and Padme learned of the existence of a droid factory, churning out battledroids for the Separatists.  This episode picks up on that, but the episode mostly just focuses on bringing down a single shield generator.

Oh, come on.  It’s not like a battledroid factory wouldn’t have a ton of security forces.

Basically, this episode is essentially all-action from the get-go and doesn’t let up once the Republic forces, which we are told are currently badly outnumbered by battledroids, shows up at Geonosis.  The factory is down there, under the control of the Geonosians.  It has a shield, but it’s a Star Wars shield, so that means it mostly just deflects energy blasts and people can walk through it.  Maybe.  The factory is set in a remote part of a fairly remote planet, with a giant wall over one spot, and that means three groups are going down just to bring down the shield.  Obi-Wan will lead one group, Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi will lead a second, and Anakin (with Ahsoka) gets the third.

Oh, and both Obi-Wan and Ki-Adi will be wounded before the attack even gets too far, Obi-Wan seriously enough to knock him out of the fight.

As for Anakin and Ahsoka, they landed with Rex and some other clones off-course or something, and they’re next to that wall by the fortress.  Anakin and Ahsoka are doing a Legolas-and-Gimli bit where they compare kill totals after every fight (Anakin keeps winning), and if anything, this is the episode where the Clone Wars looked like an actual war.

I chalk that up, in part, to who the Jedi and clones are battling.  Normally, they’d be fighting droids.  Those guys are disposable.  And the Separatists kill clones and even the occasional Jedi or other character, but the Separatists are the bad guys.  This episode has Anakin, Ahsoka, and the clones battling Geonosians, and those are not robots.  They may be literal bug monster types, but that’s what they are alive.  The improvement in the animation means there’s a lot more going on, and the fact the Geonosians can fly (even carrying a screaming clone trooper away at one point) makes for some interesting battle sequences, particularly since once the fighting starts, it doesn’t stop until the shield generator comes down.

But this is an episode where a group of clones hit a group of Geonosians with flamethrowers, and the bugs fly away in pain.

This was a Saturday morning cartoon, wasn’t it?  That seems a bit much.

Oh, the shield came down, and Ki-Adi had the most kills, but was mildly disappointed to learn the “prize” was Anakin’s undying respect.  I’m sure that will warm Ki-Adi’s heart when Order 66 comes along and Anakin slaughters the Younglings.
