Gen V “Sick”

Season One, Episode Seven

OK, these kids are surprisingly awful.  Wait, I mean unsurprisingly.

Much of Gen V has focused on how the various college kids may be engaging in debauchery, but are basically just kids at a competitive college.  The main characters are not total monster…at least they weren’t until Cate went evil from the looks of things.  I’ve said before how it is somewhat cliche to make the mind controller evil.  At this point, Cate is basically a villain.  Oh sure, it’s hard to tell in this universe who is and isn’t evil, and “evil” might be too strong a word here, but at this point, the fact is that Cate is running wild, killing Shetty and preventing Marie, the one supe who can save her life, from doing anything.

Except…Shetty kinda made Cate that way.  Cate’s life was kinda terrible from the moment her powers kicked in, but Shetty pretended to be a friend in an effort to get Cate to manipulate the others, all in an effort to create a virus for the purpose of killing supes because Homelander destroyed a plane Shetty’s family was flying in.

Why am I not surprised that, on some level, all this is Homelander’s fault?

There’s probably a cycle of violence thing going on, and that Shetty’s virus ended up in the hands of Victoria Neuman, and Neuman’s advice to Marie is, well, also terrible.  It makes sense that Neuman sees herself in Marie and basically tells her to go for a position of power instead of just being a superhero in a universe where superheroes are, well, not all that super.

But most people don’t know Neuman is a supe, so having the supe students go out and protest Neuman’s appearance at God U with a “Supes Lives Matter” protest.  That sounds like something that college students might get into but they’re basically protesting the idea that Homelander should be put on trial for murder because he did kill a man in public in front of who knows how many people.  These kids are clearly the sorts of supes that this universe churns out:  privileged jackasses that think they should be allowed to do whatever they want at all times.

I’m starting to wonder if there are more than a handful of decent human beings in this universe.  All I know is Shetty wanted the supes dead, and now Cate looks like she’d like a lot of normal humans dead.  The other protagonists of this series aren’t exactly in a good position to stop her.  Sam is kinda crazy and clearly doesn’t know what’s what.  Andre had to rush off after his father got sent to a hospital.  Jordan and Emma may be helpful in their own way, but is Cate can prevent people from doing anything, she’s probably not going to be someone that can be stopped easily.

Still, this is a much less monstrous version of the school than the one that appeared in the source material.
