Noteworthy Issues: DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock Vs. The Army Of The Dead #1 (September, 2022)

Sergeant Rock fights Nazi zombies!

Wait…Bruce Campbell…the Bruce Campbell…BRUCE CAMPBELL wrote a horror mini-series for DC about zombies?!

Yeah, this one was a no-brainer.

Issue:  DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs The Army of the Dead #1, November 2022

Writer:  Bruce Campbell

Artist:  Eduardo Risso

The Plot:  Hitler has a new secret weapon:  undead soldiers!

Commentary:  So, apparently, mad scientists working for Hitler managed to revive dead German soldiers as the ultimate weapon.  They’re fast, strong, and since they are already dead, nearly impossible to kill.  About all the U.S. Army can do is call Rock and Easy Company in to find the place where these dead guys are being revived.  Can they do it?

It’s a simple enough question, and though Rock uses the term “zombies” at one point, neither he nor anyone is Easy Company seems to know what these things are.  They shouldn’t.  The idea of the undead person who can only be killed with a headshot didn’t come around until the 60s when George Romero made Night of the Living Dead, and these are the sorts of zombies the Germans are making.

Campbell’s script is OK.  He’s not a comic book writer to the best of my knowledge, but he does OK.  The artwork, however, is by veteran Eduardo Risso, and that adds the right sort of atmosphere.  I don’t know if I am going to love this as much as I love Campbell’s movie work, but I am willing to keep at it for now.

Besides, Hitler seems a little…off.
