Noteworthy Issues: Danger Street #11-12 (November-December 2023)

The Danger Street story concludes.

Since I am finishing up mini-series when I get to them now, I figured this was as good a place as any to cover the last two issues of Danger Street.   I was mostly digging this story from Tom King and Jorge Fornés using all the characters from DC’s old 1st Issue Specials (including the Outsiders, who were there too as they appear here…mostly), but will it stick the landing?

Issue:  Danger Street #11-12, November-December 2023

Writer:  Tom King

Artist:  Jorge Fornés

The Plot:  The sky is falling due to the death of Atlas, and a whole lot of other people have died too.  But Lady Cop, she has a plan…

Commentary:  I was really enjoying this story.  Yeah, I had no idea how it was all going to come together, but after the issue where Manhunter and Codename: Assassin fought to their mutual deaths while debating the logic and philosophy behind what they were doing, I wasn’t sure this series could do any wrong.  Heck, even as far as the penultimate issue, with the body count rising and the Dingbats being the keys to everything for some reason and all, how exactly would King and Fornés wrap this whole thing up?

The answer was, well, not very satisfactorily.

I get the impression King might have bitten off more than he could chew as the series essentially sputters out in the end with some handwaving and most of the characters getting, well, something.  That means punishment for the last member of the Green Team, a cure for the Outsiders, and the New Gods get…I dunno.  I’m not even sure what they were doing there, truth be told.  For the life of me, this story, what with its Fate’s helmet’s narrating most issues like it’s a fairy tale and most of the dead getting resurrected, I’m not sure that there were even any stakes here.  Someone at some point in the past cursed the Green Team and the Outsiders, but for what purpose?  I’m not sure I even remember.

Now, I get that endings are hard, but this one here seems like there were plot threads that didn’t quite tie together combined with stakes that were never particularly clear.  I don’t think there’s much to see here when all is said and done.

What a bummer.  I was legitimately enjoying this mini-series until the last issue.
