Noteworthy Issues: The Amazing Spider-Man #84 (May, 1970)

The Kingpin takes on the Schemer with Spidey square in the middle!

You know, I think the reason I am so down on the Kingpin here is, compared to pretty much all of Spider-Man’s other regular foes, he’s not that colorful.  He looks like a regular, albeit very large, guy.

Anyway, he’s back for more with the Schemer trying to bring him down.

Issue:  The Amazing Spider-Man #84, May 1970

Writer:  Stan Lee

Artist:  John Buscema

The Plot:  Gang war between the Kingpin and the Schemer!  That can’t be good!  Why can’t they just steal 40 cakes?

Commentary:  Hey, that scene from the cover, of the Kingpin ripping a carpet out from under Spider-Man, actually happens in this issue.  Cool!

Not so cool…I still don’t know much about this Schemer guy aside from his rather flamboyant style of dress considering he’s a mob boss.  He’s got a car that Batman might find envious, but he still looks and dresses kinda ridiculously, and while I don’t know for certain, given the way he and Vanessa Fisk stopped to lock eyes with each other, the two both having those weird gray streaks in their hair (at least hers are on the side and not a skunk stripe up the top), and a few other general observations…am I going to learn next issue that he’s the Kingpin’s brother-in-law or something?

I mean, that’s the only explanation that makes sense, that he and Vanessa are related somehow.  And if they are…did he not know who she married?  I would think the Kingpin’s identity is somewhat public right now even if he isn’t in prison, but did the Schemer just not go to the wedding or something?  I mean, this is before the days of social media, so it’s not like there was an online wedding album that absent relatives could peruse.  And if he related to her, does that mean she has to get off her high horse about her husband’s criminal dealings and maybe stop blaming him for the death of their son Richard.

Wait, doesn’t he come back as “the Rose”?

The Fisks must have the most uncomfortable Thanksgiving dinners ever.

Anyway, the Schemer seemed surprised to see Vanessa, the feeling was mutual, and while Spider-Man and the Kingpin traded blows, they both disappeared.  That Humpty Dumpty lookalike crime boss is really mad now!  Peter better stop moping and do something about it.  And maybe tell Gwen he’s Spider-Man.  I mean, what’s the worst that can happen to her?
