So, what makes a good villain, especially in genre fiction where superpowers are an actual thing?
YouTube channel The Closer Look does an analysis of that idea with the Homelander character from the Amazon Prime series The Boys.
The basic concept here is that to make an effective villain, the character has to be both powerful and unpredictable at all times, and The Closer Look thinks that while many bad guys can be effective, they often become a bit more predictable as time wears on or they engage in actions that make them less scary rather than more. Homelander, by his reckoning, hasn’t done that yet. See below for details.
