YouTube Selection: Lindsay Ellis Explains The Omegaverse Copyright Lawsuit

Can a person copyright a fanfiction trope?  Fanfiction, by definition, is using characters created by other writers to tell stories, often of a more…x-rated variety.  And yet, there actually was a lawsuit between two authors over a copyright claim.

Confused?  Lindsay Ellis explained it far better than I could.

Apparently, there’s a fanfiction subgenre involving something called the “Omegaverse”.  It involves x-rated material, werewolves, and often homoeroticism.  Two of those three factored into a pair of professionally published novels, and one author sued the other and it got all the way to a federal courthouse and a mention in the New York Times.

This is a long video, but it might be worth it for anyone with an interest in copyright law.
