So, you may have noticed Gabbing Geek suddenly has a new look.
Well, we still have some repairs to do, but not for the reasons you might expect.
Essentially, the repairs are the result of two separate problems.
The first, and one we don’t quite understand around here, is how many times clicking on the links on our Facebook notifications don’t always lead to here. They go…somewhere else. No one really knew why.
And then there was another problem that popped up from time to time. Someone, probably a bot, was editing old articles, inserting new sentences that included hyperlinks to various other sites that probably were selling things. I don’t know. I never clicked on them. Mostly they went into old Simpsons articles. I’d alert the others, delete the new stuff, and move on.
That second problem came to a head this week when two articles of mine had such advertisements put into them. We’d tried to fix that problem once before, and some of the others believed I was just finding hyperlinks that I didn’t know were already there from that repair. But no, I had proof this time: the in-text ads I deleted were reinserted a day or two later. Plus, one of Jenny’s got one. So, the problem with the hyperlinks probably wasn’t on my end.
What could possibly be causing this? Well…we don’t know. Ryan’s solution was to remove the old theme, put in a new one, and hope it would solve both problems. Well, we’ll know if we fixed the hyperlinks if none reappear. That will be a matter of time. My general observation is they only pop up sporadically. The other problem, so far, seems to have gone away.
But the site still needs some visual repair work. Jenny will pop out a new banner at some point, Jimmy will sweep the Canadian Geese out of foyer, and Watson will make a crude joke. And then, well, we’ll hopefully have a nicer website.
Thank you for your patience.
Oh, if you’re the bot or person responsible for the bot that kept inserting those hyperlinks, there aren’t enough swear words in the world to describe how much I loathe you.
