American Horror Story “Welcome To Briarcliff”

Asylum, Episode One.

Here we are with a brand new season, and a brand new story, for American Horror Story, and it looks like this time around, instead of an infamous MURDER HOUSE, we get an ASYLUM…wait, that doesn’t work so well.  Anyway, so far there are aliens, nuns, serial killers, and 1960s social taboos being violated.  Will it be as good as the first story?

Was that first story good?

Yeah, MURDER HOUSE was OK.  But what to make of Asylum…

Well, we open with the lead singer of Maroon 5 and his ridiculously hot girlfriend going to an abandoned insane asylum called Briarcliff to have sex, and they run into problems that should come from going to a  place like that.  OK, really, the danger might be the need for a tetanus shot afterwards.  Seriously, this place isn’t the slightest bit of a turn on to any normal person.

But the lead singer guy loses an arm and the girl ends up running from what looks like a killer wearing another person’s face over his own.  Is that the guy they called Bloody Face back in the 60s?

Yes, most of the story is set in the 60s, and we have an interesting cast this time around.  Evan Peters and obviously Jessica Lange are still in prominent roles, while Zachary Quinto (not in this episode from the looks of things), Lily Rabe, and Sarah Paulson all got bumped up to the main cast.  And while Frances Conroy is out this year, her Six Feet Under co-star James Cromwell is here as what looks like a mad scientist type conducting experiments in Briarwcliff, a place normally staffed by nuns led by Lange’s Sister Jude.  Plus, she has the hots for the priest who set the place up, Joseph Fiennes’s Monsignor Timothy .

How are things?  Well, gas station owner/attendant guy Kit Walker (Peters) has a secret black wife because people don’t abide by interracial marriage in this time.  But then it looks like aliens appear and his wife disappears…or was murdered.  It doesn’t matter.  He’s locked up in Briarcliff, as is snooping reporter Lana Winters (Paulson) because she’s gay.  And it looks like there’s something to Kit that would interest creepy Dr. Arden (Cromwell).  And it looks like Arden has some inhuman things in there somewhere already.

So, this one tossed out a lot of stuff that may be too much to start, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
