Bento Review: Valiant Zeroes & Origins

A collection of origin stories from Valiant Comics. Hey, I generally like these!

I really dig Valiant Comics, with a couple of noteworthy exceptions.  Anytime I get a new Valiant trade from Comic Bento, as long as it isn’t one I’ve already read, I’m in for a good time.

So here we have an anthology of origin stories.

These are actually stories from various series that give backstory for the characters depicted.  Some of them I’ve read before.  Others were new.  Collectively they don’t add up to much, truth be told, but individually these are mostly fun, with the low point being the Master Darque origin from Shadowman, a series I haven’t been digging much anyway.  As for the others, there was a BloodshotArcher & Armstrong, and Harbinger I’d read before, plus some stuff involving UnityX-O ManowarQuantum and Woody, and someone called Punk Mambo.

There was some good stuff in here, but also some stuff that might have read better in the context of whatever series it was pulled from.  And quite frankly, what I remember of the original run of Quantum and Woody by their creator Chris Priest is much better than what I saw here.  I should read more of his stuff in the near future.  In the meantime, let’s say eight and a half World War I adventures out of ten.

NEXT BOOK:  Well, we have something from…wait, Archie Comics?  Huh.  The next up is called The Road to Riverdale.
