I really liked The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz and Arnold Vosloo. Even The Mummy Returns was ok until that God awful CGI version of The Rock showed up.
And let’s not even talk about the solo Scorpion King movie. The less we are reminded of that the better. It also turned me off from the series as a whole and I still have yet to see the third official Mummy movie, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Given that it sits at 12% on Rotten Tomatoes, far worse than even the Scorpion King movie, I don’t think I’ll be in any rush to rectify that.
So what do you do when your $145 million budgeted sequel grosses just $100 million domestically (and a more respectable $300 million internationally)? You reboot of course!
And the most obvious choice to reboot the pulp-y 1930’s style Indiana Jones-lite action adventure series? Umm…Tom Cruise?
That’s right, Mr. Scientology is bringing us an updated Mummy for the new generation. And now we have the first teaser for it with the promise of a full trailer coming this weekend.
The reboot stars our friend Tom (Cruise, not Kelly), Courtney B. Vance, Russell Crowe (as Dr. Jekyll…wtf?) and a bunch of people you’ve never heard of but may look familiar if you’ve seen Kingsman.
The Mummy, uh, returns June 9, 2017.
