138 episodes sure is an odd episode to celebra…wait, this is another clip show, dangit!
Well, truth be told, if The Simpsons had to do a clip show, this isn’t a bad way to go about it.  Most of the clips were either from the old Tracey Ullman Show, and a bunch more were outtakes that were cut from episodes to save time, plus an alternate ending to “Who Shot Mr. Burns?” which asks us to ignore damning Simpson DNA evidence, and that’s just nuts.
The true highlight, besides showing known hippie type Matt Groening as a rightwing crank, is Troy McClure. Â Hosting the episode from the Simpson family living room if said living room were actually a set for a TV show, Troy introduces clips and shows some genuine shock and awe at the quality of some of them.

Quite frankly, I am not sure Phil Hartman ever topped the level of Hollywood phoniness better when voicing Troy than he did for this episode…or at least until Troy marries Selma. Â Yeah, that one’s coming soon.
But really, what can you say about any clip episode, even one that pretends Homer was at one time named “Captain Wacky”? Â Not much, you know?
Still, at least here we got the robotic Richard Simmons.
