2016 Oscar Time: Watson’s Predictions!

and-the-oscar-goes-to

I have never been less excited about the Oscars.  There are some good movies in there, but I am just not feeling it this year.  I’m not even having an Oscar party this year!  But, since I have made Oscar predictions since long before we were all online, here goes!

Best Picture:

  • The Big Short
  • Bridge of Spies
  • Brooklyn
  • Mad Max: Fury Road
  • The Martian
  • The Revenant
  • Room
  • Spotlight

WILL WIN:  Lot of good movies, but no sure fire OSCAR winner in the bunch.  Revenant by default…

SHOULD WIN:  I don’t see why the Martian didn’t get more love.  It was a perfect movie!

Best Director:

  • The Big Short
  • Mad Max: Fury Road
  • The Revenant
  • Room
  • Spotlight

WILL WIN: No repeat for (I can’t spell Birdman director’s last name…or his first…).  George Miller wins for directing a movie I said was gonna be dreadful after all the previews were released.

SHOULD WIN:  Miller deserves this for making me look like a punk.

Best Actor:

  • Bryan Cranston, Trumbo
  • Matt Damon, The Martian
  • Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
  • Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs
  • Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl

WILL WIN:  The Leo Memes lose their cache today.  He finally wins for his fifth or sixth best performance ever…

SHOULD WIN:  Fassbender was the only one who was close to Leo.  Weak year for a usually strong category.

Best Actress:

  • Cate Blanchett, Carol
  •  Brie Larson, Room
  • Jennifer Lawrence, Joy
  • Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years
  • Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn

WILL WIN: Brie Larson feels like a sure thing.

SHOULD WIN:  Ronan was quite good as well in a small, charming film

Best Supporting Actor:

  • Christian Bale, The Big Short
  • Tom Hardy, The Revenant
  • Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight
  • Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies
  • Sylvester Stallone, Creed

WILL WIN: I think Sly gets credit for giving his best performance ever playing a character for the 7th time over 30 years….yet this shouldn’t be a lifetime achievement award.

SHOULD WIN:  J.K. Simmons was so strong last year, he still might win THIS year.  If not JK, then Mark Rylance.

Best Supporting Actress:

  • Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight
  • Rooney Mara, Carol
  • Rachel McAdams, Spotlight
  • Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl
  • Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs

WILL WIN:  Alicia Vikander wins in a “she was also good in Ex Machina and Kate Winslet won an Oscar for that dreadful film, the Reader” sentiment…

SHOULD WIN:  Alicia should win.

Best Foreign Language Film:

  • Embrace of the Serpent
  • Mustang
  • Son of Saul
  • Theeb
  • A War

WILL WIN : Embrace of the Serpent is also the title of my new sexual energy book, so I will go with Son of Saul.

Best Adapted Screenplay:

  • The Big Short
  • Brooklyn
  • Carol
  • The Martian
  • Room

WILL WIN:  I think the Big Short gets recognized for turning a business book into a dramedy.

SHOULD WIN:  I’m gonna bet my heart here (and lose) by going with the Martian.

Best Original Screenplay:

  • Bridge of Spies
  • Ex Machina
  • Inside Out
  • Spotlight
  • Straight Outta Compton

WILL WIN: Weak year, but I think this goes to Inside Out, which should have been nominated for Best Picture.

SHOULD WIN: Straight Outta Compton’s screenplay could win as a push back against #OscarSoWhite…

Best Animated Feature Film:

  • Anomalisa
  • Boy and the World
  • Inside Out
  • Shaun the Sheep Movie
  • When Marnie Was There

WILL WIN : Inside Out in a walk.

Best Makeup and Hairstyling:

  • Mad Max: Fury Road
  • The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared
  • The Revenant

WILL WIN: Mad Max wins every award that it is nominated for in the artsy categories!

Best Cinematography:

  • Carol
  • The Hateful Eight
  • Mad Max: Fury Road
  • The Revenant
  • Sicario

WILL WIN: The Revenant slips past Max because it was a movie made to win cinematography!

Best Costume Design:

  • Carol
  • Cinderella
  • The Danish Girl
  • Mad Max: Fury Road
  • The Revenant

WILL WIN:  Is this artsy?  Yup.  Max takes it.

Best Film Editing:

  • The Big Short
  • Mad Max: Fury Road
  • The Revenant
  • Spotlight
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens

WILL WIN: Hmmm…..gonna go with Max again.

Best Original Score:

  • Bridge of Spies
  • Carol
  • The Hateful Eight
  • Sicario
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens

WILL WIN: The Hateful Eight needs to win SOMETHING….

Best Original Song:

  • “Earned It,” Fifty Shades of Grey
  • “Manta Ray,” Racing Extinction
  • “Simple Song #3,” Youth
  • “Til It Happens To You,” The Hunting Ground
  • “Writing’s On The Wall,” Spectre

WILL WIN: Adele was so good with Skyfall, Spectre wins by association.  Just kidding.  I’m gonna say Fifty Shades of Grey wins an oscar!

Best Production Design:

  • Bridge of Spies
  • The Danish Girl
  • Mad Max: Fury Road
  • The Martian
  • The Revenant

WILL WIN: Design?  Artsy!  Max!

Best Sound Mixing:

  • Bridge of Spies
  • The Danish Girl
  • Mad Max: Fury Road
  • The Martian
  • The Revenant

WILL WIN: Mad Max is gonna run away with awards!

Best Sound Editing:

  • Mad Max: Fury Road
  • The Martian
  • The Revenant
  • Sicario
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens

WILL WIN: Max ain’t even mad any more.

WILL WIN:  Happy Max.

  • Cartel Land
  • The Look of Silence
  • What Happened, Miss Simone?
  • Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom

WILL WIN: Mad Max….no… wait…not nominated…let’s go with Amy.

Best Documentary – Short Subject:

  • Body Team 12
  • Chau, beyond the Lines
  • Claude Lanzmann: Spectres of the Shoah
  • A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness
  • Last Day of Freedom

WILL WIN: Um…rolls a dice….it came up 6….dammit….hmmm….I’ll go with a Girl in the River.

Best Animated Short Film:

  • Bear Story
  • Prologue
  • Sanjay’s Super Team
  • We Can’t Live without Cosmos
  • World of Tomorrow

WILL WIN: World of Tomorrow…
