Gabbing Geek Box Office Report- Hotel Interns

Adam Sandler versus DeNiro and Hathaway view for the top spot. Who won the week?

* Finishing first this week was Hotel Transylvania 2 with $47.5M in its opening weekend. That’s a healthy number for an animated sequel that I was suprised to learn was being released.

* Coming in second this week was The Intern grossing a tepid $18.2M in its first weekend. With the usual 2.5x modifier, the Anne/Robert D comedy should stall out at about $45.5M. That barely covers the estimated $35M production budget; let alone the marketing budget and exhibitor fees.

* Number three this week was Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, finishing with $14M in the second frame. That’s a 54% drop week over week. Pretty normal for a front loaded actioner.

*Pulling in at #4 this week was Everest with $13.1M in its second week. This one jumped +81.3% week over week on the back of an additional 2,461 screens.

* Rounding out the top five this week was Black Mass in its second weekend with $11.6M. The Depp bipoic dropped 49% week over week and looks to continue to fade.
