British humor author Terry Pratchett had died.

Pratchett, best known for his widely successful Discworld series, was 66 and had been suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease.  More after the break.

Pratchett’s Discworld was a fantasy setting in the form of a flat planet resting on the backs of four elephants standing on the back of a giant turtle as the turtle swam through the universe.  The turtle, according to Pratchett’s narration, may have been the only being in existence that knew where it was going.

Discworld itself was often used as a proxy for the real world, as the citizens of that world discovered things ranging from mail service to rock’n’roll.  The books could have been read in any order and followed a series of subseries, involving either the witches of the Ramtop Mountains, the City Watch of Ankh-Morpork, the Wizards of the Unseen University, various one-offs, and the personification of Death, the only character to appear in every book.

Death even appeared in Pratchett’s collaboration with Neil Gaiman, the novel Good Omens.

Pratchett’s output had suffered a bit due to his disease, but he leaves behind over 70 books, many of them quite funny.  He will be missed.
