All Time Geek Oscar Nominees and WINNERS!

Monday, we kicked off Oscar week discussing who would get the Oscar nods if only geek movies were eligible for consideration.  Well, what if we took that rule, and stretched it to ALL time?  Who wins?  Who gets snubbed?  Read on, gentle jerkwads!

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

  1. The Prestige
  2. Princess Bride
  3. Minority Report
  4. Watchmen
  5. The Two Towers

AND THE WINNER IS: The Prestige!  Great, under-appreciated classic from Nolan based on the book by Christopher Priest.  Funny that most of the great superhero stories (all-time) are not based on a specific book, but just the characters.  The Academy is fickle on who they put in each category, so I will be as well.  The Prestige is the second best movie of an actor who has never made a stinker.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

  1. Back to the Future
  2. Empire Strikes Back
  3. Raiders of the Lost Ark
  4. The Dark Knight
  5. Ghostbusters

AND THE WINNER IS: Ghostbusters.  Comedy is never rewarded at the real Oscars, but here at the Geek Oscars, we give due praise.  In fact, my #2 choice was BttF!  The Ramis/Akroyd script was the rare comedy that doesn’t sour with age.  Still a classic.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

  1. Heath Ledger- Dark Knight
  2. Jack Nicholson- Batman
  3. Sean Connery- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
  4. Michael Caine- The Dark Knight
  5. Andy Serkis- Return of the King

AND THE WINNER IS: Ledger.  He won in the real Oscars.  He wins here.  His closest competition was in the same film.  Connery is here mostly to piss off Jenny.  Snub here was Snape.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

  1. Karen Allen- Raiders of the Lost Ark
  2. Sigourney Weaver in Ghostbusters
  3. Lea Thompson in Back to the Future
  4. Kate Blanchet in Fellowship of the Rings
  5. Anne Hathaway in Dark Knight Rises

AND THE WINNER IS: Karen Allen.  She was the Indy femme fatale that was a true peer instead of a mere plot device.  That was to get back in Jenny’s good graces.

BEST ACTRESS:

  1. Sigourney Weaver- Aliens
  2. Robin Wright- Princess Bride
  3. Natalie Portman- V For Vendetta
  4. Linda Hamilton- Terminator 2
  5. Emma Watson- Harry Potter 7

AND THE WINNER IS: Emma Watson.  This is probably a make up call for all 8 films (like LotR 3), but she was best in the penultimate installment. Emma’s Hermione is the greatest female character in geek media and better than any of her male counterparts.

BEST ACTOR

  1. Christopher Reeves- Superman 2
  2. Robert Downey Jr.- Iron Man
  3. Hugh Jackman- X2
  4. Christian Bale- Dark Knight
  5. Harrison Ford- Raiders of the Lost Ark

AND THE WINNER IS: Harrison Ford. Indiana Jones is the greatest character in all of geekdom, and he is great because of Harrison Ford. Ford was at his best in Raiders. As good as the other four were, this wasn’t even close.

BEST DIRECTOR

  1. Steven Spielberg- Raiders of the Lost Ark
  2. Irvin Kershner- Empire Strikes Back
  3. Christopher Nolan- Dark Knight
  4. Tim Burton- Batman
  5. Zak Snyder- Watchmen

AND THE WINNER IS: Irvin Kershner.  All of these were great. You know I love Nolan.  Spielberg is the greatest director ever.  Burton’s Batman wasn’t my cup of tea, but it was artistic.  Snyder did something no one thought possible.  But Kershner made a moody, powerful, and brilliant sequel to the greatest franchise starter ever.  Star Wars was a matinee, popcorn classic.  Jedi was an adventure romp that was as fun as it gets.  Empire was an approachable arthouse film about Jedis.  That was all Kershner.

BEST PICTURE

  1. Empire Strikes Back
  2. Raiders of the Lost Ark
  3. Dark Knight
  4. Back to theFuture
  5. Iron Man

AND THE WINNER IS:Dark Knight.  Was there any doubt?  It was the greatest film ever. Slumdog shoulda finished second in 2009.  DK is everything a movie should be.  Story.  Mood.  Acting.  Action.  Cinematography.  The only thing missing was monkeys on horses firing machine guns (check out our podcast this week for that joke!)
