Proof that streaming TV services are now on par with quality and prestige of feature films, Amazon recently signed FILM LEGEND Woody Allen to write and direct a comedy series to air on Amazon Prime. The crazy thing is, this is not signs of career failure. This is a prestige move these days.
Amazon said of nabbing Allen:
“Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all-time, and it’s an honor to be working with him on his first television series,” Roy Price, Vice President of Amazon Studios, said in a statement. “From ‘Annie Hall’ to ‘Blue Jasmine,’ Woody has been at the creative forefront of American cinema and we couldn’t be more excited to premiere his first TV series exclusively on Prime Instant Video next year.”
This move raises the bar in Amazon’s battle with Netflix for premium content to go along with reruns of That’s My Mama! Some big names have been involved with Amazon and Netflix, but none of Allen’s stature. Of course, there are only a handful in his league so unless Netflix counters with Scorsese or Spielberg, Amazon is gonna win this race!
The broadcast networks are dead. Even traditional cable should be drafting its will. Streaming will change everything. Now give us net neutrality!
