Doctor Who “The Talons Of Weng-Chiang Part 2”

You know, I thought the giant rat effect in episode one looked OK by the standards of this show.  Then I read that fans regard it rather poorly.  I didn’t see what was so bad about it.

Then I saw episode two, and oh yeah, I get it now.

Also, this serial seems to be getting even more racist as it goes along.

What makes it worse?  Well, Chang, who seemed like he was at least the ringleader of some crime faction is, in fact, someone else’s minion.  Beyond the various Victorians the Doctor and Leela encountering continuing to make racist comments about the Chinese, and it just keeps getting worse.  The Doctor doesn’t join in, but he likewise doesn’t ask these people to stop.  That seems out-of-character.

But anyway, the Doctor and Leela escape the giant rat with help from a smoke bomb, and the Doctor sees the rat doesn’t chase them very far.  It must be there to guard something.  But what?  Probably the mystery man’s hidden lair.  And that guy seems to really want the TARDIS for some reason.

So, while the Doctor investigates the theater, complete with an owner who keeps getting hypnotized by, oh, everybody, Leela goes back to Professor Litefoot’s place.  He’s the coroner who was a bit surprised when Leela and the Doctor seemed to figure things out before he did.  Also, he doesn’t know what to make of the fact Leela doesn’t seem to understand how silverware works.

So, while the Doctor and the theater owner dodge holograms and other things, Leela watches as Litefoot investigates a man he saw outside.  Litefoot doesn’t find anyone outside.  He probably found someone inside when that ventriloquist dummy guy got into the house.  I don’t know what happened to the Professor, but that little guy is approaching Leela while armed, but seeing how much ass Leela has been kicking, I can’t help but think that small man might be in for a world of hurt.

He probably has it coming.
