Teen sex comedies have been around for ages.
What about a female-centric one? That’s part of what made the new movie Blockers different.
Blockers follows three parents and their respective daughters on prom night. Teens Julie, Kayla, and Sam all decide for different reasons to lose their virginity on prom night. Julie left her computer open and her mother sees the furious texting going back and forth, causing the parents to get involved, also for different reasons. Julie’s mom, Lisa (Leslie Mann), is a single mom who invested a lot into her relationship with her daughter and is fearing the girl leaving home. Kayla’s dad Mitchell (John Cena) just doesn’t want his little girl having sex, something his wife feels very differently about. Sam’s dad Hunter (Ike Barinholtz) is an absentee father who doesn’t mind the idea of his daughter having sex, he just doesn’t want her having sex with her date for reasons I won’t disclose since it was a nice twist.
Essentially, director Kay Cannon has two movies going on here: the girls trying to have a good time and figure out what they want out of life, and the parents coming together as well after they themselves drifted apart for different reasons. Hunter, in particular, was played largely for laughs as a sleazeball until he confesses his reasons for doing what he did, and the reaction he got for that confession works very well in a movie about lack of communication. Also, for a sex comedy, what nudity there is happens to be male. That’s a bit different. Overall, it was funny and sweet, with Mann in particular giving a standout performance as an anxious parent afraid to let her little girl go. Eight and a half out of ten poor attempts to do a Fast and Furious move.
That male nudity thing also means you will see some dude’s junk. You’ve been warned.
