Deadwood “Amalgamation And Capital”

It’s like this whole episode is just setting up a tragic last few minutes.

William Bullock, the stepson of Sheriff Seth Bullock, seems like a sweet kid.  He’s something his stepfather and mother Martha can somewhat bond over, and he actually knew Seth’s brother longer than Seth himself did.

There’s a lot going on around the camp as there always is.  A man who killed his brother for the claim to sell to Toliver is himself killed after a bad interrogation with Bullock and Charlie Utter doesn’t go well.  Joanie and Calamity Jane seem to be bonding.  Charlie needs to go away for a while.  Swearengen has to explain tactics to Merrick.

But if Swearengen and the Pinkerton agent didn’t call for Seth to oversee a transaction, a transaction made in part by the fact that Alma is opening that bank…

If Martha hadn’t asked for Alma to come to the opening of the bank vault…

If William hadn’t been given permission to check out that bicycle again…

If there wasn’t an attempt to geld a wild horse…

Any one of those things changing may have prevented the horse from getting loose and trampling the boy, breaking his back.

So much went wrong in just a few scenes.
