Killing Joke Honest Trailer…Yeah, What Was Up With That Batgirl Prologue?

A while back I reviewed the animated adaptation of Batman: The Killing Joke.  It is a tale of two halves.  The second half is a very faithful retelling of the Alan Moore/Brian Bolland classic.  Honest Trailers picks on the art and voice work a bit, but I thought it was fine.  It is so faithful, there really isn’t much to complain about one way or the other.

Where the movie falls apart is the opening 28 minute prologue that is completely new material and has nothing to do with the source material.  One doesn’t even lead into another.  I get that they were a) trying to pad things out because the source material was not long enough to support a feature length movie; b) give Batgirl some background so that when we get to her tragic appearance in the actual Killing Joke material it will give us all the feels; and c) trying to pad things out because the source material was not long enough to support a feature length movie.

I think the movie as a whole gets judged for the misstep with the prologue, which in some ways is unfair.  The actual adaptation is fine.  Even the Honest Trailer mostly picks on the Batgirl story, as it rightly should.
